The Child Custody Social Study
So you've been hearing about this thing called a Social Study or perhaps social evaluation and you're starting to get a little nervous about it. What is a social study for? Who will do the evaluation? What should I expect to happen? Will I know when the social study evaluator is coming? Do I have to keep the house clean and hide the wine? Never have so many been so terrified by the vast "Unknown". With the proper preparation, you will not only pass with flying colors. You may actually help your child custody case by having a good social study.
- Your social study may include a Home Study, as well as other interviews of each parent and each child.
- They may also wish to visit with others who are in a position of parenting, such as grandparents, step-parents, etc, as well as other relevant adults such as doctors, teachers and even neighbors who could provide character assessments.
- A social study could include observations by the evaluator of each adult interacting with the child(ren).
- All allegations of domestic violence will of course be investigated, along with background checks which can include police records and court filings.
- Each of you will likely be asked by the investigator to complete a questionnaire.
- Finally, all the notes and findings will be presented to the court for consideration, as it pertains to the child's best interest, and may include recommendations.
There are coaches available to help you prepare for your social study, but the same information is available online for significantly less investment than paying a professional.
